Hiking

Hiking in the Pacific Northwest is like no other, and we’re lucky to have some of the best spots right in our backyard. From easy to difficult trails, you’ll be sure to find one that suits your desire for difficulty. Below are just a few of our recommendations.

Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge (Carty Unit) - Easy

Explore the historical terrain once traversed by Lewis and Clark at the Oaks to Wetlands trail in Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, offering abundant walking and sightseeing options for families. Within the refuge, discover several walking loops, the longest spanning approximately two miles. Keep watch for majestic eagles, graceful sandhill cranes, elegant swans, and other wildlife. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the Cathlapotle Plankhouse during your time there.

Moulton Falls - Moderate

Situated roughly 40 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Moulton Falls beckons. Take a leisurely stroll along the mostly flat, 2.6-mile out-and-back trail, tracing the scenic Lewis River and crossing the iconic Moulton Falls bridge. This hike, rated easy to moderate, is ideal for all ages. For those seeking a more challenging adventure, explore the various trails branching off from the main area.

Dog Mountain - Difficult

Ascending Dog Mountain is no small feat, but the springtime vistas at the summit are unparalleled. Prepare for a predominantly uphill journey that will surely get your heart racing, and if you're afraid of heights, brace yourself! Along the trail, numerous viewpoints offer breathtaking panoramas of the Columbia River Gorge and the vibrant wildflowers carpeting the terrain. Given its popularity during this season, ensure you obtain a $5 permit before embarking on the hour-long trip from Vancouver for this unforgettable adventure.

Bike Riding

Experiencing the wind blowing your hair and inhaling the crisp, rejuvenating air can work wonders for the soul. And what better way to achieve this than embarking on a bike ride? Whether you're seeking a leisurely weekend excursion with the family or craving the adrenaline rush of mountain biking, we've curated a selection of the finest destinations to suit your preferences.

Salmon Creek Greenway Trail

Stretching over three miles of smoothly paved trail, the Salmon Creek Greenway Trail offers an urban oasis mere minutes from downtown Vancouver. Delight in the natural splendor of the area's wetlands, bottomlands, and forested hillsides as you stroll or bike along. On clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of majestic peaks like Mount Hood in the distance. Widely lauded as an ideal destination for a family-friendly bike ride, this trail promises a delightful day out for all.

Round Lake

Designated as an intermediate-level ride and spanning just over two miles, the Round Lake Mountain Bike Trail in Camas offers diverse terrain suitable for riders of all skill levels and picturesque scenery. Its proximity to Vancouver makes it a convenient addition to a day packed with multiple activities. After your ride, consider unwinding with a refreshing drink at one of the nearby breweries, such as Grains of Wrath or A Beer at a Time.

Kayaking

It’s time to grab those paddles and hit the water! Or if you don’t have your own, that’s okay, luckily for you there’s a few places not too far from Vancouver that offer rentals right on the water.

Lake River

Meandering through the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge from the Columbia River to Vancouver Lake is Lake River. If you require gear rental, head to the Ridgefield Boat Launch and navigate your way to Ridgefield Kayak Rentals. Alternatively, if you have your own equipment, launch from the adjacent kayak launch. Before setting off for an enjoyable day, take note of the current direction and wind speed, as they may vary. With its serene surroundings, Lake River offers ample waterways for a full-day excursion or even just a couple of hours of leisurely paddling.

Lacamas Lake

A short distance from Downtown Vancouver, nestled among the trees in Camas, WA, lies Lacamas Lake. On a sunny Pacific Northwest day, the lake is adorned with vibrant boats and families delighting in a refreshing swim. With two conveniently located boat ramps, there's ample room to launch your kayak, or you can opt for Sweetwater SUP Rentals, which provides everything you need for an enjoyable day on the water.

Fishing

Washington is a go-to state for anglers, boasting a wide variety of fish year-round. With over 40,000 miles of rivers and thousands of lakes, many would argue that it’s one of the best places in the country to cast a line. Before you head out, check regulations for fishing spots and gather your licenses.

Columbia River

Washington is one of the few places where you can pursue all species of Pacific salmon. During the spring and summer seasons, enthusiastic anglers rise early, eagerly anticipating their chance to reel in a prized Chinook salmon from the Columbia River. With numerous guided fishing boats stationed in and around Vancouver, you, too, can seize the opportunity to catch this impressive salmon species.

Battle Ground Lake State Park

Battle Ground Lake State Park is located about 30 minutes from Vancouver and is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown. Don’t forget your fishing pole either because thousands of fish are stocked annually. During the months of March through June, you’re likely to catch rainbow trout along the shore.

Yale Reservoir and Lake Merwin

Make Vancouver your home base before you head out to a string of lakes, known as Yale Reservoir and Lake Merwin, about an hour away from town near Mount St. Helens. Here, in the spring, you’ll find the best fishing for kokanee, also known as silver trout. During this time, the fish are found in the shallower waters, which are great for fishing from the shore.

Zip-Lining

In the Pacific Northwest, birds enjoy some of the most breathtaking views, and now we have the chance to experience them too—through zip-lining! Located approximately 50 minutes from Vancouver amidst towering trees, you'll find ZiplineX in Amboy (north of Vancouver) and Skamania Lodge Zipline Tours in Stevenson (east of Vancouver). Both adventures take just a couple of hours to complete, making them perfect daytime activities for the entire family. After an exhilarating day, return to Vancouver for a relaxing meal and unwind.

Indoor Fun

Looking for action but want to stay inside? Consider indoor rock climbing or axe throwing in downtown Vancouver.

The Source Climbing Gym

Whether you’re new to climbing or a seasoned professional, The Source has a climbing course for you. You can visit The Source for just one session or participate in their memberships, events, and classes. Also, there's no need to worry about not having your own gear, as they have shoes, harnesses, and chalk bags available to rent.

Firehouse Axes

In the downtown Vancouver scene is its first ax-throwing house, Firehouse Axes. Its location, an original firehouse built in 1932, has been remodeled to accommodate the relatively new sport but still maintains its original charm. Grab your friends for a fun time of throwing axes and see who will hit the bullseye. Firehouse Axes also offers food and beverage options for those wanting their full experience.
